February 26th, 2009 by paule   Subscribe To Our FeedAn underwater or waterproof digital camera is not just used to capture underwater memories; some professional marine photographers also use underwater digital cameras in their business. Studying the life below the surface, underwater digital cameras are only normally within the realm of marine biologists and other nautical scientists. In fact this is such a sophisticated area that most people will have no interest in underwater digital cameras except to see the animals that live below the surface.
I for one would love to have a proper underwater digital camera but this is not likely to happen and I really don’t go into the sea often enough to make it worthwhile.
There aren’t that many manufacturers of these special cameras. Part of the problem is water getting into the into the cameras case. Manufacturers have found it is easier just design a watertight case that goes around the digital camera instead. These cases have been very popular, especially with people on holiday that want to take a few underwater snaps with their favorite digital camera. So we often have to settle for buying the best waterproof digital cameras.
If it is your aim to take some underwater images then there is some advice I can give you to improve the quality of the images. Read these tips on using a waterproof digital camera.
The water has a strange effect on light as I am sure you have experienced from time to time; it is called diffusion and the deeper you dive the more this distortion takes place. The result of this is a darkening of the captured image so adjustments to the white balance are needed. Also, pictures taken underwater will come up larger than pictures taken on land with the same zoom effect. You will have to pay more attention using the viewfinder to make sure you are achieving the shot you want.
Before using your underwater digital camera, submerge the camera in the water first for several seconds then check if there are leaks through the case. Even a silly thing like a strand of hair can break the seal so check carefully before submerging. It is also advisable to put a silica gel pack or two inside the case of your underwater digital camera as long as they don’t disturb the camera’s operation.
Most underwater digital cameras come with optional lenses so don’t be afraid to add these lenses to your underwater digital camera kit. If you enjoy looking at things close up then you will need to fit a macro lens.
When you have finished using your underwater digital camera be careful to wash it thoroughly to make sure all the salt water is removed as the salt will crystallize and this can cause leaks. It is not uncommon to experience the odd grain of sand getting into the case which will cause problems later on so rinse the case with a flow of clean water.
It is usually the better digital camera manufacturers that will manufacture the more specialized products like Nikon, Canon and Sony.
