My Review of OPENRSM CloudBackup
Friday, November 21st, 2008 by pauleProduct Review - Online Backup - OPENRSM CloudBackup
Overview:
OPENRSM CloudBackup is a service that lets you store files and backup data securely to a nearly unlimited backup to internet vault. Unlike competitors, OPENRSM has CloudBackup engineered to scale from minimal to massive with no restrictions. You pay a flat fee (which get’s you a BIG datastore) and only pay extra for the actual storage you use in excess of that. It works the same on Windows, MAC, and Linux systems as well.
You can access the CloudBackup drive as a mapped network drive, or use a browser (Explorer, Firefox, Opera, Chrome, etc.), over WebDav or via the local http server. CloudBackup keeps a local cache that allows most operations to be instantaneous with any changes being made in the background. The builtin backup utility works well and previous versions are kept if desired. This makes CloudBackup suitable for backup as well as temporary file storage, or as a remote filesystem for collaborative work. Block level incremental backup is supported through CloudBackup.
Cool Features
- New Intuitive User Interface
- Support for connecting to multiple data stores at the same time
- Support for multiple backup jobs with independent scheduling
- Highly configurable bandwidth limiting
- Identical Features and Interface on Windows, MAC, and Linux
- Download verification and in-application reporting
- Unlimited number of computers with a single account
Who it’s for:
Due to the versitility of CloudBackup automated backup, accessing files from anywhere, and more is possible. The interface is very intuitive and the setup is just as simple than most other programs. And CloudBackup delivers ease of use for all levels of users that need safe, secure backup (and that’s everyone, isn’t it) or share files remotely without being restricted like others do. Or, like me… BOTH. And the network drive looks like any other attached storage (only unlimited size) to all your applications and utilities. You can set it, forget it, and let the scheduler backup all changed files.
Good Features:
Set it and forget it backups. Set up the automatic backup and you no longer have to worry about disk failures or data safety. Efficient bandwidth use. It only updates changed bytes (instead of entire files) and buffers it with it’s internal cache. So bandwidth use is limited after the first backup. Easy administration but powerful too. Settings to keep previous versions, upload limits, backup previews, and full logging. You can get dirty if you want but I hardly ever needed to access the manual. Works with your existing software and systems. The network drive can be used like any other local volume… Just unlimited in size. I use Access, wikipad, and other programs to use the data files directly off the network drive and it works perfectly. It’s also terrific when you set QuickBooks, etc., to use the Network Drive. And it doesn’t make any difference if you have Windows, MAC, or Linux… It simply works, and works well.
Things to Know:
Depends on your internet connection. Inherent to CloudBackup is your broadband connection. If you have restricted usage limits then CloudBackup might push it for your first backup cycle. However you can set to backup at certain times each night and limit speed to stay within certain time limits. But the upload bandwidth controls and efficient use of that bandwidth renders this a nonissue. It has to be said I guess I’m always open to do nearly the same for cheaper or free. But, CloudBackup is feature rich and moderately priced. A killer combination.
Here’s why I reccomend it:
It’s the best solution for remote access to your documents, photos, and files while providing painless backup. Together, it’s a great combination. Add in the security and flexibility and I have to heartily recommend it. Paying a small monthly fee to have his peace of mind is worth it for me.
How it Stacks Up:
- OPENRSM CloudBackup has more space and reliability than a local backup.
- Files are still available for all processes with full functionality unlike other solutions.
- The backup to internet functions are as good as local backups.
- Your own backup or sync software can still be used even if you don’t really need to since the backup intervals can be set from every five minutes to once a week.
The Last Word
CloudBackup is a cost effective data storage solution that’s secure, powerful, and flexible. I can’t reccommend it if your internet access is slow (dialup) or heavily restricted. But in all other cases it’s a must do. Solutions that cost less (and may do less) could be available, but I can’t find any. CloudBackup is a rock solid way to make life simpler for my home and work computers.
